The only excitement of each day came when little children with sticky fingers would try to bounce up high enough on their sneakers to tap the glass of the tank. Yitzhak sometimes humored them by pouting his fish lips and wiggling his fins, while Miranda just looked for a good place to hide.
Time after time, Miranda and Yitzhak watched fish friends go home to new families, and they wished it would happen to them one day.

"I'll bet it's tons better on the outside," Yitzhak said, glaring around at the pet store.
"Not if we go home with one of those sticky kids," Miranda pointed out.
Then a terrible thought occured to Yitzhak. "Miranda," he said, swimming over to her side. "What if we have to go to different homes?"

The very next day, as the pet store was about to close, two people came to their tank and began to point.
Miranda whispered to Yitzhak, "Pssst! Come over here! We need to show them we're a pair!"
Yitzhak saw what she meant right away; these weren't sticky kids like the others -- they were nice people who looked like they would love their fish. He straightened his fins and swam to the side of the tank.
Soon the people walked away, and Yitzhak's fins drooped. "I don't think I was perky enough," he said. "I'm sorry, Miranda."
"It's okay," she said. But Yitzhak could see she was very sad.
They were just about to float to another corner for bed time when a pet store employee came their way.
"We've already had dinner," Miranda said.
But the employee didn't have dinner in her hand. It was a net! And standing behind her were the two nice people from before!
"They've come to get us," Yitzhak exclaimed. "Will they want us both?"
Miranda just stared. She looked like she was holding her breath.
The net dropped into the tank. It lifted Yitzhak out into the chilly air, and he landed safely in a clear, plastic bag of water.
He was getting a home.
But his eyes were fixed on Miranda. There was plenty of room in the bag for two. Couldn't they bring her home, as well?
As if the employee could hear his thoughts, she dipped her net once more and swept Miranda into the baggie with Yizhak.
"We did it," she cried! "We're going home together!"
"I wonder what it will be like," Yitzhak said. "I can't wait to find out."
